Australia Day 2019 - Media Release

The Australian High Commission marked this year’s Australia Day by holding a reception with a special focus on Australia’s Indigenous culture with the unveiling of the Yiwarra Kuju: Canning Stock Route Country Indigenous Art Exhibition which will be on display to the public later this year at the Caudan Arts Centre.

Australia Day provides an opportunity for Australians to come together as a nation to celebrate what’s great about Australia - the people, land, diversity, sense of a fair go, lifestyle, democracy and the freedoms Australians all enjoy.

In her welcome address, Australia’s High Commissioner to Mauritius, HE Ms Jenny Dee said: “As we mark Australia Day 2019, it’s also an opportunity to recognise Australia’s active international agenda and the important friendships and partnerships we have forged – including here in Mauritius – as we pursue our shared interests of peace and prosperity.”

The High Commissioner said there would be further strengthening of cooperation with Mauritius on the blue economy with the delivery later this year of an Australian built multi-purpose research vessel in partnership with the Mauritian Ministry of Ocean Economy.

Cooperation in education and research between Australia and Mauritius is also expected to grow with the hosting of the Australia Africa Universities Network Conference at the University of Mauritius will host in July 2019.

The Yiwarra Kuju: Canning Stock Route County Indigenous Art Exhibition is a touring exhibition developed by Australia’s pre-eminent museum of social history, the National Museum of Australia. The exhibition is a reproduction of works of Australia’s most renowned Aboriginal artists of their travels on the Canning Stock Route, an 1800 kilometre road carved through the heart of Australia’s Western desert region which was the frontier upon which Aboriginal people first encountered European settlers. The exhibition has received the support of Curtin Mauritius and Dukesbridge.
