The 2004 Miss Universe, Australian Jennifer Hawkins, paid a brief visit to Mauritius with her team from Australian television show The Great Outdoors during the first week of June. Jennifer and the team joined around 50 invited guests from the tourism and Australian community for a cocktail reception at the Australian High Commissioner’s residence in Floreal on Sunday 4 June.

The Great Outdoors was in Mauritius filming segments for shows to air over the coming months. Jennifer, who now is one of the seven presenters working for the television program said that she and the team had thoroughly enjoyed their time in Mauritius and thanked the guests for attending.

In welcoming the team, Australian High Commissioner Ian McConville highlighted the impact such a show, which is broadcast to over 3 million viewers in Australia, could have on the tourism industry in Mauritius. He thanked Air Mauritius and the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa for sponsoring the team’s visit, which strengthened the tourism sector relationships between the two countries.

Prior to landing in Mauritius, The Great Outdoors crew had filmed a shark diving story in South Africa and were to travel on to Reunion to film further segments on the region.

The visit of the former Miss Universe attracted a strong level of media interest, with many interviews and photographs subsequently appearing over the following days. It is hoped that with the airing on Australian television of these segments, perhaps Mauritius can have a similar seductive influence on Australian holiday makers.
