 Message from the High Commissioner

We are delighted to present our end of Year edition of the Australian High Commission Newsletter. We have had many activities keeping the High Commission team busy over the past few months. This includes our Kickin’ Up Dust Photographic Exhibition, Australian Alumni activities in both the Seychelles and Mauritius and our Consular Warden get-togethers.

We are also very pleased at the ongoing collaborations in the field of education (Edith Cowan University teacher trainees making a visit) and in the field of medical interventions (the wonderful work of Professor Paddy Dewan in Mauritius and the recent efforts of the Australian Doctors for Africa team in Madagascar). Additionally, we are pleased to showcase some of the more social facets of our activities referred to in this newsletter, including our Melbourne Cup Event.

A congratulatory call in the
Seychelles
by the High
Commissioner following
President
Michel’s election in July 2006

Our foreign policy and trade agenda for the region has also been a busy one in the past few months. This has resulted in the High Commission team engaging in dialogue on a range of issues from global trade liberalization, to illegal fishing issues and even our efforts to work with regional partners to counter the scourge of global terrorism. On a bilateral note, it was with pleasure that I traveled across to the Seychelles to call on President Michel and to pass on the congratulations of the Australian Government at his successful re-election in July 2006.

Don’t miss our forthcoming activities, headed up by the critically acclaimed Australian Film Festival (the third time staged in Mauritius and a premiere event in the Seychelles) which is scheduled for February of next year. There is lots more, including Education Exhibitions, Australia Day on the 26 January and the annual Anzac Day Event on 25 April 2007.

Most importantly, we wish you and your families a restful and peaceful New Year, and we look forward to seeing you all or keeping in touch one way or another in the coming months.
